Information for maternal Patients

Some women become unwell during pregnancy. In some cases this needs closer monitoring. In some instances your organs (for example your heart or kidneys) may need supporting artificially. Year on year, more women are needing intensive care either during pregnancy or after delivery.

The intensive care environment is a scary place for anyone, and in normal circumstances would never feature in a pregnant woman’s birth plan. We have extensive experience looking after pregnant women and women after birth. We also work closely with the obstetric (maternity) team too.

Whilst you stay with us, a midwife and obstetrician will visit you and review your care regularly. We will ensure regular visits with your family. As soon as you are well enough and no longer need intensive care, we will step you down to maternity.

Once you are back home we will invite you to attend our follow up clinic (‘Recovery after Critical Illness’) where we hope to answer any questions you may have.
