Supporting those with Learning Disabilities

In ICU we appreciate that the environment and routines can be unsettling for patients who have learning disabilities.

As a team our priority is to ensure that you, or your person with learning disabilities has individualised support and care, by working collaboratively with the Learning Disability Liaison Nursing team.  

Together we will aim to provide a safe space for your person to get better, and look at things within the ICU environment that we could change to help your person feel more comfortable. Nursing staff will also encourage you to complete an ‘all about me booklet’ whilst on ICU, this helps us to understand more about your person.

Learning Disability Liaison Nurses information

The Learning Disability Liaison Nurse is the central contact within the hospital for patients, families, staff and outside agencies regarding patients with learning disabilities.

They offer 

  • Facilitating reasonable adjustments, including appointment times.
  • Parental support and reassurance while young person in hospital.
  • Liaising with other health and social care staff.
  • Planning multiple investigations where necessary.
  • Facilitating links with LD community nurses and acute specialist nurses – e.g renal, epilepsy, end of life care. 
  • Support and advice and raising awareness to all health care staff within Trust
  • Awareness training for hospital staff

 

When your person with learning disabilities is in ICU the Learning Disability liaison nurse can arrange to visit at regular periods as a familiar face to listen to you about any worries or anxieties you may have.
